SISKINS WIN SERIES

The Waterloo Siskins won 2-0 at home tonight to knock the Guelph Hurricanes out of the GOHL play-offs. The Siskins will now play the Stratford Cullitons in the Semi-Finals.

The Canes played another strong game but were outmatched by the veternan Waterloo team. The game was scoreless through 2 periods thanks to the excellent netminding of Chris McDougall despite the Siskins holding a 2-1 ratio on shots on goal. The Siskins secured the win by scoring 2 powerplay goals in the 3rd.

The Canes owners, coaches, players and volunteers would like to thank all their fans who have supported the team in its first season. Plans are already in the works for next season. With such a young team the future of the Guelph Hurricanes looks bright.

GAME 5 TONIGHT IN WATERLOO

The Waterloo Siskins have pushed the Guelph Hurricanes to the brink of Play-Off elimination. The Siskins took a 3-1 lead in the best of 7 series with a hard fought 3-0 win at the Ice Palace Tuesday.

The Siskins were full marks for their win but not before the gritty Canes gave them everything they had. Colin Breen stopped 32 shots for the shut-out while Chris McDougall saw 39 shots and made many great saves to keep the Canes close. The Siskins scored into an empty net with the Canes pressing to put the game away.

It was a small but enthusiastic crowd that was treated to a fast, clean but hard hitting game. Game 5 goes this evening at the Waterloo Rec Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

SISKINS UP 2-1

The Hurricanes put last nights home loss out of their minds and started fast in Waterloo to-day in game 3 of the series. On power play goals by Cam Jude(3) and Tyson Theaker(2) the Canes took a 2-1 lead to the first intermission. The Canes defense played a much better game to-day and took away the shooting lanes for the better part of the game.

The Siskins responded in the second period by scoring the only 2 goals of the period to build a 3-2 lead entering the 3rd. With the Canes presssing for the equalizer Zach Loerntz spoiled the momentum with a Siskins goal t amke the score 4-2. The Canes fought back and despite penalty woes Mike McFarlane scored a shorthanded goal to make the score 4-3. Waterloo finished any notion of a comeback by scoring 2 more goals before the 3rd was in the books.

Assisting on the Hurricanes goals to-day were McFarlane(featured pic), Zach Dion, Brandon Anselmini and Connor Ste. Marie.

The Canes once again proved they are a much better team on the road. In order to fight their way back into this series they will have to find a way to win at home this coming Tuesday night at Victoria Road arena. Game Time is 7:30 p.m.

HURRICANE NOTES:  The captain Mike McFarlane (featured pic) won the Canes award for Fan Favourite as voted on by the fans.  Evan Jones also was awarded with the Fan of the Year Award. Evan has been a regular at Guelph Jr. B games over the last several years both at home and on the road.

SISKINS TIE UP SERIES 1-1

The Waterloo Siskins were on a mission when they visited the Sleeman Center for game 2 of the best of 7 quarter-final series with Guelph. Still smarting from their 3-1 loss at home in game 1 the Siskins out-hit, out-shot, out-hustled and most importantly out-scored the Hurricanes to win game 2, 7-1.

The largest crowd of the season saw two Hurricane Awards handed out at the start of the game. They were treated to an exciting 1st period where the Siskins took a 1-0 lead. The Siskins and Hurricanes were hitting everything that moved. This was a much rougher game than game 1. There were 22 penalties handed out including 12 to Waterloo. It would be safe to say that the powerplay was the undoing for Guelph in game 2. The Siskins took the first 4 penalties. They scored a shorthanded goal and basically shut the door on Guelph while they took a 2-0 lead. The Hurricanes were unable to muster much offense on those powerplays until Connor Ste Marie's first of the play-offs made the score 2-1 and the Hurricanes were suddenly back in the game. Mike Iacocca and Jake Weidner assisted on the powerpaly goal. The Siskins bounced right back about a minute later scoring their own powerplay goal. The Canes never recovered their game after that goal. The Siskins scored the last 5 goals and played their usual stingy defensive style of hockey to keep the Canes at bay.

When the Siskins are on their game their "Shut the Door" defense frustrates the team they're playing. The Canes ran into some penalty trouble and were hard pressed o get quality shots on goal.

It was a very entertaining hockey game with the Siskins clearly the better team on the night. The Canes have to stick to their game plan tomorrow afternoon in Waterloo if they hope to go up 2-1 in the series.

HURRICANES TAKE GAME 1

To win a play-off game you need 3 things. Tight defense, timely goals and excellent goaltending. The Guelph Hurricanes had all 3 Wednesday night in Waterloo and took game 1 of the play-offs 3-1.

Cam Jude(featured pic) was the offensive hero scoring twice. His goal late in the 3rd with the Siskins pressing salted away the hard earned win. After playing a scoreless and penalty free 1st period Jake Weidner opened the scoring on a nice 3 way passing play with Zach Dion and Luca Penzo. TYson Theaker and Dion had 2 assists each. Mike McFarlane added the other assist.

The goaltending of Chris MacDougall was solid through-out the game and came up big when it counted most. He faced 40 shots and turned all but one away. He was assisted by a defense that has been improving as the season wore on. Youngsters Peter Soligo, Brandon Anselmini, Daniel Cotroneo, Wade Pfeffer and Connor Ste. Marie all had solid games. Veternans Dion and Penzo were a steady influence when the Siskins turned it on in the 3rd.

NIc MacEachern(ankle) and Cayle Creen(out for season) did not play.

The 1st home play-off for the Canes is Saturday, March 6th when the Siskins visit the Sleeman Center for game 2 of the 7 game series.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CANES DEFEAT CYCLONES

With the GOHL playoffs starting next week the Guelph Hurricanes are playing their best hockey of the year. Case in point....the Canes defeated the 3rd place Listowel Cyclones in Listowel tonight. The final score was 4-3 thanks to some penalty trouble at the end of the game.

The Canes were leading 4-0 and had the game under control with 5 minutes left in the game when they ran into some penalty trouble allowing the Cyclones to score 3 consecutive powerplay goals to make it a one goal game. In the end the Canes held on and were able to secure the win and clinch 7th place and a playoff meeting with the 2nd place team.  The Brantford Golden Eagle and the Waterloo Siskins play Saturday night in Oshwegan to settle the battle for 1st. The Canes will play the loser of that game in a best of 7 series which will start next week. Check back at our website Sunday for the actual dates.

The Canes got a strong game from goalie Chris McDougall as according to the creative shot counter in Listowel the Canes were outshot by a wide margin. McDougall held the Canes in while they built a 4-0 lead on goals by Martin Kudla(18,19), Blair Goss(5) and Tyson Theaker(19). Assists were collected by Connor Ste. Marie, Mike Iacocca, Jake Weidner and Daniel Cotroneo.

The Canes finish off the regualr season with a return match in Cambridge tomorrow night. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

ANDY WELLWOOD - "#@$%^ happens. Its not that things #$@% happen but how you handle it that counts."  Anonymous

That quote pretty much sums up the laid back trainer of the Hurricanes. Andy worked a number of years helping young hockey players while they were playing in the Guelph minor system. It seemed like the right thing to do when he moved up to the junior B ranks to help young junior hockey players. Andy has been with the junior team for 4 years now. First when they were the Dominators and now as a Hurricane. Andy is a competent, no nonsense mentor, respected and liked by the Hurricane players.

Andy's favourite things include the movies "D-Day", "The 6th of June"  and "White Heat". Favourite song "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple. Favourite food a siloin steak with baked potato, corn with a good red wine. Any biography makes for a good read and watching the TV show "Criminal Minds." #10 Mike McFarland - "Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value."   Albert Einstein

Our captain, a 20 year old veteran played with the Dominators last year while attending the University of Guelph. He hopes to continue his hockey career while furthering his education. He sees Real Estate Development or Finace in his future. His mom and dad, Pam & Colin reside in the family home in Ajax, Ontario.

Mike combines speed and grit to make him a tough player to play against. He leaves everything on the ice every shift and is an excellent role model for the younger Canes. Injuries slowed Mike down early in the year but his game has picked up as of late and Coach MacEachern is counting on Mike's leadership to lead the Canes into the Play-offs.

Some of his favourites include "The Wedding Crashers" -movie,  "Big Green Tractor" sung by Jason Aldean, the TV show "Entourage", the colour blue and sitting down to a steak dinner with roasted red peppers. His hobby is playing the guitar and "chillin with the boys" is his idea of a good time.

One of the Hurricanes 16 year old defensemen, Brandon's words speaks volumes for not only the athlete but the person. Presently he attends Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic HS in Guelph. He maintains an 80% academic average and won the Athlete of the Year Award. One of his goals is to finish HS and continue his studies at a great University. He lives at home in Ariss with mom and dad, Stace and Attilio respectively.

Last year he played for the Guelph Minor Midgets AAA. He has had a good start to his 1st junior hockey season.  He has seen his playing time increase as his defensive abilties continue to improve. He scored his 1st goal as a junior in Stratford a few games ago by knocking the attacking player on his can at center ice, scooping up the puck, rushng at the net and finally finding the top corner. His shorthanded goal helped the Canes secure the win. He's a strong skater with great puck control. He plays an aggressive but disciplined game. The coaches comment on his excellent coachability.

Brandon's favourite movies include Happy Gilmour, Forrest Gump and Billy Madison.  He loves a variety of music including some country, rap and good time oldies. John Cougar Mellancamps "It Hurts So Good" is one of his favourite songs. Other favourites include the colour orange, sheppards pie, reading hockey magazines and watching Sports Centre. He is a hands on kind of guy who loves to build things. Someday he may pursue a career in the housing industry. Like most hockey players he relaxes by spending time with the boys.

The Canes hope that Anselmini will continue to improve and help the Canes defense become feared around the league for the next few years.

#6  LUCA PENZO -  "Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle."  Abraham Lincoln

Luca played with St. Michaels Buzzers of the OJHL last year and resides in Toronto.

Once a player's midget career is over they have a decision to make in terms of their future.  Luca decided to combine his love for hockey and need for an education by enrolling at the University of Guelph and playing junior hockey for the Guelph Hurricanes. At the UofG he is in the Bachelor of Commerce program  his major being Real Estate Development. He hopes to graduate with a Commerce degree.
